Value Statement

Austin Community College is committed to the success of all students and will offer appropriate placement of students and, when necessary, remediation and support for those students not-yet college ready.

Administrative Rule

Students who are deficient in mathematics will be placed into the appropriate level of developmental mathematics.

The performance standards for satisfying the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement for being “college-ready in mathematics” will be the performance standards set by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Students who satisfy the TSI mathematics readiness requirement by passing one of the state-approved tests are eligible to register for College Mathematics (MATH 1332), or Mathematics for Measurement (MATH 1333), or Elementary Statistics (MATH 1342).  Passing one of the approved tests does not satisfy the prerequisite for any other mathematics course.

Students can demonstrate college-level readiness in mathematics in any of the following ways:

ACC has set the performance standards for the initial testing for being eligible for MATH 1314 College Algebra or MATH 1324 Mathematics for Business and Economics as:

Under the ACC Developmental Education Plan, students who test into the developmental level in mathematics are not required to take mathematics until their third semester at ACC unless their chosen major leads to an AS or BS degree, or an AAS degree or certificate with significant math skill requirements.

Students who need Developmental Mathematics in addition to Developmental Reading and/or Developmental Writing are not required to take mathematics until their fourth semester at ACC unless their chosen major leads to an AS/BS degree, or an AAS degree or certificate with significant mathematics skill requirements.

Once students begin their remediation in mathematics, they are required to be enrolled in continuous remediation until they demonstrate college-level readiness.

ACC shall develop and use a variety of methods to minimize the number of cases where a person who had mastered basic algebra at an earlier time is placed at an inappropriately low mathematics level due to poor assessment-test performance resulting from lack of recent practice.

Students transferring from other public institutions in Texas:

Students who have not satisfied the college-ready requirements in mathematics at the public institution where they were previously enrolled must take the COMPASS test.  Students who meet the college-ready requirement will follow in the same manner as non-transfer ACC students.  Students who do not meet the college-ready requirement will be given their Individual Plan and placed into the appropriate developmental mathematics course.

Students whose former institution verifies that they are college-ready in mathematics may register for College Mathematics (MATH 1332), Mathematics for Measurement (MATH 1333), or Elementary Statistics (MATH 1342).  To register for any other mathematics course, the student must meet the prerequisite requirements of the course.

Students transferring from independent, private or out-of-state institutions:

Students with an Associate degree or higher from accredited Texas public, private or independent institution or an accredited out-of-state public, private, or independent institution will have demonstrated fulfillment of TSI requirements and will have met the college readiness requirements.  Students who meet the college-ready requirement will follow in the same manner as non-transfer ACC students

Students without an Associate degree or higher and who have earned a grade of C or better in any course equivalent to a course in the ACC Mathematics Core Curriculum list will be deemed “college-ready” in mathematics.

Students who cannot be deemed college-ready based on their transcript must take the COMPASS test and follow in the same manner as non-transfer ACC students.
