Austin Community College adheres to the policies established by the Texas Legislature regarding the Texas Success Initiative Program.  Unless otherwise TSI exempt or completed, each student who enters ACC must take the appropriate reading, writing, and/or mathematics skills assessment prior to enrolling in developmental courses or college-level courses with skill prerequisites.  Even students who are TSI exempt, waived or completed may be required to take a placement test to enroll in higher-level math courses.

The purpose of mandatory assessment at Austin Community College is to determine the level at which students perform in basic skills.  The mandatory assessment identifies those students who have academic weaknesses, who are unlikely to be able to perform college-level work, and who need remediation to upgrade their basic skills.

Upon entering ACC, a student must present state approved assessment test scores or proof of exemption or waiver from TSI requirements.  The Compass Test and the Asset Test by ACT are available at ACC as TSI approved tests for students who are not exempt or who have not taken the THEA Test and as a placement test for those who have failed one or more sections of the THEA test or for those waived from TSI requirements who need to demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, or math skills.  Performance standards for reaching college-level in reading, writing, and math will be at the performance standards set by the Texas Legislature for the Compass and Asset Tests.  These are as follows:
